Overview

Often called Tummy Tuck or Post Baby Body Surgery, this procedure corrects the appearance of the abdomen where muscles have separated and the skin has stretched.  These conditions are often the result of weight gain or loss and the aftermath of pregnancy.

Surgical Plan

This surgery must be performed in hospital, under a general anaesthetic and may require one or two nights stay.  The operating time will vary according to the individual patient requirements.  It may also include some liposuction as part of the procedure which will take from 2 -4 hours, or longer if liposuction is included.

During the procedure, excess fat is removed, muscle is tightened and loose skin is removed.  The incision is along the bikini line and is closed with dissolving sutures under the skin ensuring the resulting scar will be barely noticeable once healed.  Some patients may require drain tubes for the first few days of recovery.

There may be some discomfort in the area during week one after the procedure and pain relief medication may be prescribed.  It is advisable to allow two weeks post operatively before returning to usual activities, with up to six weeks needed before returning to strenuous exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Abdominoplasty painful?

Throughout the operation, the patient is asleep and there is no pain felt. During the recovery period, pain relief may be necessary for seven to ten days.

What if there is no fat but the lower tummy sticks out?

Often thin or athletic women who have had children will have this condition. During the operation the abdominal wall muscles will be repaired and the excess skin removed.

If there are other scars on the abdomen from Caesarian section, appendicitis or a gall bladder operation, can they be removed?

If the scars are in the area of skin to be removed, they will also be removed. The options are discussed by the surgeon during consultation.

Will this assist after weight reduction?

Patients who have been obese and then lose weight, frequently have a large apron of skin and fat and this is seen in men and women alike. This can be corrected with a procedure called an abdominal lipectomy which removes, not only the excess tummy, but the love handles and excess skin on the back.

What if there is fat, but the skin is smooth and has good tone?

In this case you are probably a candidate for liposuction. While some liposuction is done in almost all Abdominoplasty, the big question is whether liposuction alone can solve the problem. Only a consultation and examination can provide you with that answer.

How long does it take to recover?

Whilst vigorous activities are limited for 6 weeks, many patients are able to return to work within 10 –14 days.

What are the costs?

$11,000 + hospital & anaesthetic
